John Butts ‘View of Cork from Audley Place’, c 1750, Cork Crawford Art Gallery
Casting Call: Winter Sun
Winter Sun is a 10-minute long looped moving image artwork, inspired by a sunset view at Bell’s Field, Cork City. This public art commission will be projection-mapped onto a prominent public building in Cork City in November 2024.
The art work will feature the sky, with a glowing orange sun and below it a green hill, the setting for twelve actors, portraying Corkonians of many kinds: a young family playing football, a group of students, a delivery cyclist taking a break, an older resident, a teenage guitarist. In a nod to John Butts’ painting “View of Cork from Audley Place”, there is a couple with a Dachshund. As it might occur on Bell’s Field, each actor or group of actors enters and leaves the scene naturally, and some may stay in their position for the duration of the work. Each individual basks in the glow of the setting sun, which is static. The sun never fully sets, it remains in its permanent half-moon shape, fixed in time.
The intention of the art work is to celebrate and reflect the cultural diversity of Cork City and to represent the lived experience of multiple identities. We particularly welcome applications from Black and minority ethnic people living in Cork.
No acting experience is necessary. Having sufficient English to follow directions from the director and crew during filming is desirable but not a requirement, and if necessary an interpreter can be provided during shooting. If there are any barriers which might prevent you from applying, please let me know and I will try to accommodate you as best as possible.
Each actor is paid a flat rate of €150. It is expected that filming each group will take approximately one hour.
